Holy Women, Holy Men
Celebrating the Saints
This volume is the new replacement for the series of books entitled Lesser Feasts and Fasts.
Holy Women, Holy Men includes two pages for each saint and feast day in the Episcopal liturgical calendar. The left-facing page for each day describes biographical information for the saint while the right-facing page offers two prayers for that saint as well as the Scripture lessons assigned for that day. You may view the list of saints on the Episcopal calendar by clicking on this link, or this page and then scrolling down to the Calendar heading.
Fully revised and expanded, this new work is the first major revision of the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church in more than 40 years! It is the official revision of Lesser Feasts and Fasts and authorized by the 2009 General Convention. All commemorations in Lesser Feasts and Fasts have been retained, and many new ones added. Three scripture readings (instead of current two) are provided for all minor holy days. Additional new material includes a votive mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many more ecumenical commemorations, plus a proper for space exploration.
One of the Priests at my church spoke about this book and I recently ordered it. It has been an excellent addition to my daily prayers and readings.
I pair this book with the Contemporary Office Book when I do Morning and Evening Prayer. I save the reading for last to instill a sense of connection between the far regions of the Church and her storied past.
Holy Women, Holy Men has allowed me to expand my devotional life to include more than just the observance of Morning and Evening Prayer in the prayer book. When I have the story of a saint to read, and a collect to pray, I can focus on more than just myself and begin to fathom the enormity of this blessed communion. This is a splendid resource for anyone wishing to enrich their prayer life or their knowledge of the saints.
I have wanted this book for a couple of years and now that my sister joined the Episcopal Church, I purchased one for her and one for myself. It is a lovely book and I use it in my daily prayers. The saints are such an inspiration. Service from Episcopal Book Store was suberb as usual!
Superb explanation of the life of people and saints that are in our past. Inspirational and informative.
For years I used Lesser Feast and Fast as part of the Daily Office. Now that this update has come out it is great. Anyone using this book will find an asset to their daily devotion. Very inspirational.
Although I'm new to the Church, I'm sure everyone-- young, old, longtimer or newbie -- will enjoy this book as much as I have. I received my copy as a gift, and it is a most interesting, thought provoking and enjoyable "read". Each day's offering is short and well done. Breadth and scope are ecumenical, rich historically and cover the entire world. Holy Women, Holy Men will occupy my special "frequently consulted" bookshelf for a while, I think.
As someone who prays the breviary every day this is a much needed book. My old Lesser Feast and Fasts has been a dear old friend but it was time to move on. I am so pleased with Holy Women,Holy Men. I've only had it for a week and am still being pleasantly surprised by all that it has to offer. Thank you Episcopal Bookstore! You are a real blessing. Take care.
As a relatively new member of the Episcopal Church, like a great many folks having left the Roman Catholic Christian church, I found this new version of "Lesser Feasts and Fasts" a tremendous treasure.. Already I have been introduced to a richer range of holy men and women from every age and every corner of the Christian world than I had ever been aware of before.. Thank you for gathering "so great a cloud of witnesses " between two covers..
A must book, if you want to be current on the Church's Saints and Feasts days.
