An Orthodox icon, whether Eastern Orthodox icon, Russian or Greek icon is much more than a religious picture. A religious picture can be painted by any artist. It is the artist’s interpretation of what Our Lord or a particular saint may have looked like. Typically an icon is “written” by a monk who has been given permission or directed to create it. An icon has been described as “a meeting between heaven and earth.” Others have told us that they may tire of looking at a religious painting but an icon remains fresh with something informing the viewer each time it is viewed.                         –By John
